how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
how might the title be a clue to the story?
1. A mystery novel is written with tricky words. There is almost always an underlining question that needs to be answered. For instance, if there were cookies stolen in a mystery, then the question would be who stole the cookies?. In a mystery the whole plot is usually based around one question and trying to figure out the answer to that question. In other cases, a narrative is a straight forward literary work that depicts a series of events. Usually there is not a mysterious question that needs to be answered in a narrative, but simple conflicts that leads up to a climax. There is a climax in mystery novels but unlike narratives the climax is usually when the question is answered.
2. The title might be a clue to a story because it could be the answer to the question without anyone knowing. It may provide a a base clue to build your personal solving on. The title might be a missing piece of information that may help solve the question needing to be answered.
At the end of the chapter when the man says that the judgment day is coming I believe that eventually all the characters will be killed on this mysterious island knowing that the story is a murder mystery. What the old man says is a clear foreshadowing of what will eventually happen.
Hayden,
Your answers show some very good insights. Your prediction also shows knowledge of how foreshadowing is being used. Good job,
Some suggestions would be the following:
reread your post looking for errors in spelling, punctuation, and usage,
link this page to the student pages and to the page with the prompts

Assignment #2 (to be done in class on Wednesday, December 2)
Put a line between Assignment #1 and Assignment #2.
Read chapter two.
On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.
Example 1 - (House) There was something sinister about it. She shivered faintly.
Example 2 - "An Island eh? There's a fly in the ointment."
Example 3 - One little indian boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were none.
Example 4 - "The heathen are struck down in the pit that they made.---The Lord is known by judgment which he executeth.--- The wicked shall be turned into hell."
Example 1 is the giving of the overall feeling of evil to the house and the place that it resides. This foreshadows the wicked events that may occur in the house in the passing time. She gives the feeling that the house is going to be associate with sinister actions. In example 2 it is shown the secluded aspect of all small islands. This was a foreshadowing for me explaining discretely that if something were to happen on the island there would be no way out. This also goes hand in hand with the passage where it is said that the Island can not always be accessed and when the boat left he could not go back. This shows that he was now somewhat trapped on the island, like all the others. The fly in the ointment part is basically saying that this is a problem. Example 3 is a very clear foreshadowing for me. The hanging of the last little Indian shows that death is about to occur. It is hinting for me towards the eventual suicide of one of the characters in the plot. Example 4 shows foreshadowing for me because many of the people on the Island have shady pasts. This is represented by the words the heathen and the wicked. I believe that this is a foreshadowing to the eventual deaths/killings of all the characters with evil backgrounds. The first sentence saying The heathen are struck down in the pit that they made shows that they will eventually be meet their deaths because of the evil actions.
Hayden-
Your answers show insights into the plot of the novel; you have good examples of foreshadowing. Feeling a sense of evil and mystery is exactly what a mystery novelist wants the reader to experience.
